Commissioner profile

Dr. Nikola Stepanov has spent much of her career in dedicated service to the public sector and community. Her background is in conflict resolution and mediation in the clinical and corporate settings. She has particular expertise resolving complex and contentious ethical conflicts, for example, where there are grave risks to the community, agency, or individuals.

She holds several degrees including a Juris Doctor; and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne (School of Global and Population Health and Melbourne Medical School), which she completed in the fields of paediatrics medicine, professional ethics, and human rights/ humanitarian law. Professional accreditation includes as an accredited mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation System, and accreditation by the Federal Attorney General’s Department as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.

Dr. Stepanov has a strong research background and continues to be involved in research as the Chair of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee; an Associate Investigator or Partner on a small number of existing studies; and as a PhD supervisor to her existing PhD students. She has also retained her strong links with medical ethics and law, and teaches into a number of medicine and law programs.

In her spare time Dr Stepanov is a snow skier, plays the saxophone (badly), and is a keen section hiker. She completed the West Highland Way in Scotland just before taking up office in 2017, and will walk the Camino later this year. Although a seasoned camper and back-packer, Dr. Stepanov is keen to try ‘glamping’ and ‘gliking’ as age sets in. She is co-located, and lives in Brisbane and in Toomulla Beach (north Queensland), and has three adult sons.
