Commissioner profile

Dr Nikola Stepanov has spent much of her career in dedicated service to the public sector and community. Her background is in ethics and mediation, with particular expertise resolving complex and contentious ethical conflicts, for example, where there are grave risks to the community, agency, or individuals.

She holds several degrees including a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne (School of Global and Population Health and Melbourne Medical School), which she completed in the fields of paediatrics medicine, professional ethics, and human rights/ humanitarian law. In December of 2017 she will complete the Juris Doctor (jurisprudence).

Dr Stepanov is an accredited mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation System, and accredited by the Federal Attorney General’s Department as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. As well as various professional memberships and appointments, she has an adjunct appointment with the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University as an Associate Professor.

Dr Stepanov has a strong research background and will continue to be involved in research as the Chair of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee; a member of the Metro-South Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee; an Associate Investigator on a small number of existing studies; and as a PhD supervisor to her existing PhD students.

In her spare time Dr Stepanov is a snow skier, plays the saxophone (badly), and is a keen solo section hiker, and completed the West Highland Way in Scotland just before taking up office. She is co-located, and lives in Brisbane and in Toomulla Beach. She has three adult sons, James, Thomas, and Adam (Chow).
